[SOLVED] CTRL key locks randomly after updating Windows 10

A few days ago I did the required update in Windows 10. Since then I've had an issue where the CTRL key seems to be on without pressing it and seems to happen randomly. I wasn't sure what was happening and only after opening the on screen keyboard did I see that the CTRL key was lit up. There is nothing I can do to turn it off other than to reboot my PC. At first I thought it was my keyboard so I checked to make sure the drivers were up to date but that didn't help. I tried using a different keyboard from a different manufacturer but the problem persists. I've turned off the sticky keys and toggle keys and I've tried holding down various keys but nothing works. I ran the keyboard troubleshooter but it didn't detect anything. I'm really not sure what else to do. I've had my PC for two years and this was not an issue before the update. Looking over what was updated and don't see anything that would indicate what would cause this to start happening. I'm using Windows 10 Home Version 10.0.19044 Build 19044

If anyone has any idea how to fix this I would really appreciate it

if clean boot fixes it, it shows its likely a startup program. You should, over a number of startups. restart the programs you stopped to isolate the one that is to blame.

I gave this a shot and it didn't seem to fix anything. However, when the CTRL was stuck and I opened the on screen keyboard I was able to click on the lit up CTRL key to turn it off. This did not however solve the issue with the key still being recognized as being pressed.

So you tried a clean boot and it still occurs?

have you tried different USB slots on PC?
have you tried just using on screen keyboard without a keyboard attached, see if it still happens?

wondering if its maybe a macro on the mouse, some mice software lets you set up keyboard commands on buttons. What mouse are you using?

what are specs of the PC?

does it happen in safe mode?
  1. go to settings/update & security/recovery
  2. under advanced startup, click restart now button
  3. this restarts PC in a blue menu
  4. choose troubleshoot
  5. choose advanced
  6. choose startup options
  7. click the restart button
  8. choose a safe mode (it doesn't matter which) by using number associated with it.
  9. Pc will restart and load safe mode
