I have a netgear wireless router, I assume the usb connector is for sharing files between computers. Curious how to go about setting it up. I'm hoping it shows up as a shared drive. A couple of pointers would really be great

Don't know about your Netgear detail, but my old wireless router has a SD card instead of USB port, you use a web browser to browser / copy / move / delete the files on the SD card. I guess that your router's USB port works the same way.

You have to set it up as samba on the router and also have samba properly set up in windows, or any device you want it to show up as a drive.
Otherwise as lvt said just copying files around is a bit easier, you just set the router up as an ftp server, vlc can play movies in that way.
