I've begun to plan a build that will be dedicated to supporting video processing and similar uses.
I will keep my present PC for my usual everyday usage.

It's only about 6 months old.
I will be transferring some components from the present PC to the new build.

I have reused my CD/DVD drives by moving them into new builds the last 2 or 3 times.
I'll be installing a new drive in the new build.
I do not want or need a Blue Ray drive.
I do want a good double layer capability, though.

As I look around at reviews for the present crop of burners, I see nothing about newly minted drives.
All the highly rated drives: ASUS, Plextor, LG, etc. are drives that have been out for a number of years.
It is almost always the same ones listed in every review.

What's up with them?
Have they maxed out for capabilities?
Have thumb drives and such killed the market for them?
...Or?

Thanks for your response Dark Lord of Tech.

Yeah, the Plextor - PX-891SAF is one of the top rated CD/DVD burners right now.
It seems that both the LG GH24NSC0B and the Asus DRW-24B1ST are a bit better thought of than the Plextor.

This Plextor model has user reviews going back into the late 2015's.
Many think that Plextor is no longer the Plextor their reputation was built on.

Both the LG and the ASUS have similar older reviews making them look to be older issues also.
There does not seem to be any newly issued models in the CD/DVD burner category.
That brings me back to my questions:

"What's up with them?
Have they maxed out for capabilities?
Have thumb drives and such killed the market for them?
...Or?"

Never got into 8 tracks.
I always used reel to reel, then moved on to cassettes.
Then, I went on a vinyl buying binge as CDs began to replace them.
I finally did convert to digital.
Got a pile of vinyl I'm hoarding, though.
Come to think of it, I also resisted the change over from film to digital.
Didn't finally make the conversion until I could get a decent 24MP camera.
That's only been in the last year or two.

I do like new technology.
I just don't always see it as being an improvement until it's proven to me.

Guess this may be my last CD/DVD burner.
I still find many uses for having one handy.
i am making the concession of only putting one unit into this build.
I've always had two of them.

This may be a replay of my affair with floppy drives.
I finally stopped finding any need for having one about 5 years ago.
Didn't include one in that build.
Now, I don't miss having one around anymore.

Thanks guys.
