Current Expansion Questions

Can someone please indicate which expansions are current and which have just
gone out of print?

I understand that Fifth dawn is about to come out so which expansion does it
replace?

Also we are now on revision eight, how long has this been out and how long
before revision nine (best guess)

Sorry for all the questions but I have been away from the game for a number
of years and want to get up to speed

Many thanks in advance

Well, you'll have to define "current". You can still find packs of Alpha,
Beta, and Unlimited if you're willing to shell out massive amounts of cash.
If, by "current", you mean "tournament legal", then there's a few different
sets of rules:
Type 1: All sets (except the Portals and Unglued)
Type 1.5 All sets since Tempest (I think)
Type 2: 8th edition, Onslaught block, and Mirrodin block (although 5th Dawn
isn't yet legal...another month or so)

I'm not sure if they're actually still printing any sets other than 5th
Dawn, but the type 2 sets are still readily available, and have not yet
suffered the "out of print inflation" associated with older sets.

It doesn't necessarily replace any set, it's just added to the Magic catalog
of expansions. If you're talking about, again, tournament legal sets, then
this set has no effect on the legality of any set (other than itself, of
course). When the next block becomes legal, all of Onslaught block will be
rotated out (ie, "replaced" in Type 2).

I don't know of any official date, but maybe a year? I dunno.

I was away from the game for quite a while as well. I left right around the
Weatherlight-Tempest era, and returned to the game only about 6 months ago,
before Darksteel was released. Welcome back!

The only expansions in print _right this second_ are: Mirrodin, and 8th
Edition.

Darksteel is out of print at the moment, though there's still a lot of it
around.

Fifth Dawn is not yet _in_ print; it will be released in about a week and a
half for general retail sale, though some players won packs at prereleases.

It doesn't replace _anything_; all Magic expansions are unique.

Don't confuse "Is it in print now?" with the question I suspect you -meant- to
ask, "Is it _legal in Type II_ now?". What's legal in Type II tournaments right
now is 8th Edition, Onslaught, Legions, Scourge, Mirrodin, and Darksteel...
but only two of those are +in print+ right now. Fifth Dawn will become Type-II
legal on June 20th, I believe.

8th Edition came out summer 2003; 9th Edition is due out summer 2005.

For a long long time the release schedule has been pretty constant. The main
sets come out every two years in the summer; the big yearlong expansion set
comes out in the mid-fall; the first small expansion set comes out midwinter,
and the second one late spring/early summer.

Well, he implied "in print".
I suppose that could be interpretted as "still being sold by WotC".
In some circles of the printing industry "in print" actually means
"in stock".
Odd, I know. ;(
