I'm running out of patience with the pirate fights - I'm in an insult loop,
as it were, with the same ones popping up, over and over. I can't seem to
expand my repertoire and I end up being defeated because I don't have the
correct responses in my choices. I was really enjoying the game until this
part. I think I've defeated the first 3 levels of pirates with who knows how
many more to go, but I'm getting frustrated with the whole nonsense.

Anyone remember how to get through this? Any helpful hints or words of
encouragement?

FWIW, I just finished MI 1 and 2 and loved them. This one I'm fast becoming
disenchanted with.

Thanks!
Lynne

Gamefaqs.com has all the replies available.

I think you're supposed to duel the easy ones over and over until you've
learned what they got, then you go onto the intermediate, repeat until
they
got nothing you'll learn, and repeat with the advanced guys until you
get
to the boss.

Hi 🙂

I didn't care for MI3 either.

It seemed to me to be a case of forever plodding onwards without that much
enjoyment.
I did finish it but don't consider it to be anywhere near as good as nos. 1
& 2 :-(

Cheers.

Well, stubbornness rather than skill got me through the whole thing. I agree
that this one wasn't as much fun as the first two. I think that in 1 and 2,
I focused on the story and the humor without being distracted by the
graphics. I think that there wasn't much they could do with the graphics, so
creativity and effort went into the story. In 3, I think there was more
glitz and wow-graphics than substance. I'm holding off on playing 4. I'm
Monkeyed out right now. Lynne

Played this when it came out and am helping my step-daughter with it now.
We just finished the Pirate/Insult fights. Granted, it is not as good as
the insult fight in Monkey I but still it's fun.

You should have a choice of 2 ships to fight - not so fearsome pirates and
fearsome pirates (if I remember correctly and stay away from Rottingham for
now). Best I can tell you is alternate back and forth - when you win and get
treasure, upgrade your cannons then go back for more. My step-daughter was
getting frustrated because she didn't realize you could use the red arrow to
scroll down for more insults/replies. Also, she wasn't heading back to port
to upgrade her cannons and wasn't getting new insults/replies. As you know,
keep picking ones you don't know the answers to and hope you get the correct
replies.

Good Luck and have fun.

I couldn't agree with you more! We started playing computer games in 1994 -
strictly graphic adventures. The first few were:

Star Trek Judgment Rites
Star Trek 25th Anniversary
Indiana Jones Fate of Atlantis
Gabirel Knight Sins of the Father
Kyrandia Hand of Fate
Monkey Island I

To be quite honest - the graphics were rather poor but the games were some
of the best we played - probably because they didn't try to dazzle you with
graphics. They delivered plot, story line, excellent puzzles, characters and
to be quite honest, I liked the music for all the above games too.

Then they started with FMV which wasn't terrible. I liked Gabriel Knight 2 -
Beast Within and Phantasmagoria. Then the developers decided if they
impressed us with graphics they could make a short game with a weak plot and
story line. The important think was that it was pretty to look at - to hell
with the quality.

To this day my favorite games are the ones I listed above and I continue to
replay them because of the music, whitty dialogue, puzzles, plot, etc.

Maybe the reason people lost interest in Graphic Adventures is because the
graphics were wonderful but the quality suffered!!

Personally I have mixed feelings about Monkey 3 - The prologue, and Acts 1
and 3 were excellent, challenging and funny, just about meeting Monkey 2 in
quality. But the whole theme park thing was, well, OK but not brilliant.
And why oh why did they put insult fighting back into the game? In the
original game it was basically a crude method of extending gameplay on
limited hardware, just like the labyrinths in Zak McKraken, only it was
partially excused because the first time you see it, it is actually a
*mildly* amusing gag. Monkey 3 had moved beyond the technology
restrictions of the first game, so there was no real need to have such a
protracted, drawn out sub-game to extend the gameplay, and the gag of
insult-fighting is not funny second time round - I'd much rather have a
sea-voyage like that in Monkey 1, or Simon 2 or, at the very least,
throwing SOME puzzles into it between the combat. The ship-battles were
quite fun, but the insult fighting should never have been recycled. Then
they went bananas (ahem) and put insult fighting all over the place in
Monkey 4 - great.

Hi 🙂

Well, for me, Monkey IV was the weakest of the lot.
I really, really didn't care for it :-(

But lots of others enjoyed it !!

And it's always best to have a variety of opinions of course ;-D

Cheers.

I never noticed the graphics in Monkey 3 except that I didn't like the
look of the characters. Most of the game I liked.

I've never cared for theme parks in games.
Didn't like the one in Monkey 2.
Didn't like the one in Monkey 3.

There wasn't any REAL insult fighting in Monkey 4 at all.
Insult arm wrestling just isn't the same. But I'd prefer it
over "Monkey Kombat" anyday. What a PITA that was.

The insults in Monkey 3 weren't as good as in Monkey 1.
I really enjoyed them in Monkey 1.

The ending sequences of Monkey 2 completely spoiled it for me.
If I ever replay it, I won't bother with the ending.

My favorite of all of them is still the first one -
Secret of Monkey Island.

I don't understand that at all.

Limited hardware meant that insult fighting was needed to extend gameplay?

It was acceptable when you had a 486 but not on an Athlon 64?

Actually, I'm glad to know that I'm not the only one to do just that. And, I
did some research on Monkey Island 4 - the interface alone is enough to put
me off, unless I can program a game controller like I did with Grim
Fandango. Much easier than trying to remember what key/keys to use to do
something. So, no MI 4 for now. I'm now playing The Riddle of the Sphinx. So
far, I'm enjoying it. Lynne
