Hello,

My wife has been wanting to upgrade to a curved monitor for a while so I think I may surprise her with one.

I’ve looked at several different monitors but the options and features are a bit overwhelming. I’m hoping someone can answer a few questions for me and perhaps make some suggestions.

Budget-$500+/-

Size - she currently uses a 27” LG non-curved regular monitor. Everything I read says to go with widescreen (makes sense) if you get curved. The most common sizes seem to be 32 and 34. That doesn’t seem like a huge jump to me but I’ve never seen one in person. Do you think 32/34 would be a noticeable difference for someone use to at 27”?

Resolution - 3440x1440, 2560x1440, 1560x1080, etc. The current monitor is 1080p. I just put an RTX 2070 in so I think something higher wold be okay. Worried that anything below 2560 will cause the image to look stretched?

Refresh Rate- current monitor is 60Hz. She’s not an FPS freak and usually sets vsync to 60. Am I correct in understanding that anything over 60 is a waste if you do this? Would this also make anything with G-Sync useless?

Brand - Always had good luck from LG and Dell but open to anything.

Any advice is much appreciated.

Probably wouldn't hurt to wait the week but I feel as 3440x1440 is more the standard for ultra wide so I don't necessarily think the priced will go down, but maybe? I could possibly see the drop in 2560x1080.

34" 3440x1440P/100hz for under $500.

Speaking of CES this Samsung looks amazing!

I just purchased last month an Acer Predator 32in curved 2560x1440 gysnc 144hz VA panel. I love the monitor but as far as the curve......I stopped noticing it after the 4th-5th day. Now I don't even see it.

Once you see one in person, especially next to a 27 it's a big difference.

As far as vsync, you will no longer use it as long as you use Gsync. Even if she does light gaming the increase in monitor refresh rate with Gsync enabled makes a huge difference.

That video card would be a little overkill on a 2560x1080. Nothing wrong with that, and some people like a lower pixels-per-inch than the average (I'm among them).

Also, if going for curved, I highly, HIGHLY recommend an ultrawide aspect ratio (21:9) vs the normal widescreen ratio (16:9). The wider field of view in most games is amazing.

GSync wouldn't necessarily be useless, particularly if going to 3440x1440. There might well be spots in a particularly demanding game where the frame rate dips below 60, and GSync would keep it smooth with the dynamic refresh rate adjustment.

Given that, it also wouldn't hurt to have a monitor (if the price range is about the same) that goes above 60Hz. You don't necessarily have to use it, but if it winds up costing nothing more or only slightly more, it doesn't hurt to have that extra breathing room.... in case she does start getting a taste for higher refresh rates.

Thank you for the suggestion. Someone on another forums suggested the LG along with this Dell.

I really appreciate the feedback. Thoughts on the monitors mentioned above?

Everything in the 32/34 range with G-Sync is about $200 over my budget so that’s probably not feasible. I’m hoping that the 2070 will be enough to keep most games at 60 FPS. She can also lower the settings if need be.

I concur with WildCard. It would be a nice-to-have for GSync, but the price premium . . ouch! The 2070 should be able to smoothly handle 3440x1440 @ 60Hz.

I have no experience with Dell monitors, but have heard good things overall. I only have experience with an LG, and have been happy with it. I don't think you can go wrong with either choice, and just compare maybe stand adjustments, warranty length, etc.

The MSI does look solid. I know nothing about their displays but I’m a pretty loyal to MSI when it comes to video cards.
