I want to have a custom email address like mail@mydomain.com. Earlier, Google apps used to be free. Is there still any way to host it on Google Apps for free. If not, what’s the best free alternative?

Solution
Well I just looked at the settings I have access too and I dont see why I couldn't. Gmail wont host your email account but it can be set to collect the email automatically from it and to reply to any email received from it using the custom domain etc.

It is easy enough for the registrar to host your email. Most will do it for a small price, some may include one box in the registration price if you don't have a lot of send traffic. I use Godaddy because the guy who registered my domain for me did it there. But I pay a small amount for email and have no specific recommendation. From any mail account you can use GMail to handle the email either by forwarding or having GMail serve as a client to pick up the emails.

I heard that Google stopped providing for custom email addresses. If it is still possible, please tell me how can i do it for free?

I don't know anything about Google and free custom email addresses.

The only way I know to get a custom domain is to register it with an internet registrar. It is pretty cheap as long as you aren't too picky about the top level domain. .US names can be registered for $4.00 on Godaddy. Then you have all the email addresses you want as long as they end with your domain name. Just be aware that there are hundreds to choose from, and most are sold at a premium by marketing companies. You may have to hunt around. Godaddy sells email hosting for $4.00 per month. Again it is not free but fairly low cost. Try other registrars for a better deal.

I know this is not just what you are looking for, so I hope someone else chimes in with a better solution for you. That free stuff is disappearing from the internet pretty quickly.

I have already bought the domain. I need a host for the email. I thought if Google was still providing for free custom email addresses i could use it.

With Gmail you can set the send address - the address the person receives if from to be whatever you like. You can also set the return address in a similar way. However receiving email would be done by the company you registered the domain with but you can set gmail up to automatically pull the new email from that POP3 account and store it in your gmail. It is also capable of knowing that the email came from your custom domain and replying to those emails using your custom email address.

I think Google doesn't offer free hosting for custom email addresses anymore. I am using Zohomail for now.
