I need to set my display to a resolution of 288x512 (portrait). On windows 10, CRU (Custom Resolution Utility) worked for this, but caused a driver/hardware malfunction, forcing me to reset my system to Windows 8 (which is nice anyway) so that I could continue using my Nvidia GT 730M card. I've tried Hotkey Resolution Changer, both versions of CRU, nircmd, using the custom resolutions option of my Intel HD4000 (I can't use Nvidia custom resolutions because Optimus). I may have tried another program, but have forgotten if so. Nothing worked.

Also, Chrome is having a problem wherein it freezes and sometimes turns black except for the bar up top when a popup window comes up. I think it also has random freezes sometimes, not sure. Is this a Windows 8 error?

I like Windows 8's speed, including the lightning fast search, so I would prefer not to update my system in any way (have it vanilla with no updates and Windows Update fully disabled).

My system:
Intel HD4000 and Nvidia Geforce GT 730M on Optimus
Laptop
Windows 8 64

Windows is meant to work with resolutions above 1024x768, and Nvidia graphics cards only support resolutions lower than 640x480 for S video outputs for specialty applications (no Windows desktop support)

Why the hell would you ever even try to use 288x512?
