I built a custom PC for gaming a few months back and I'm having an awful time with random shutdowns! When i first assembled the PC, it was less problematic but i still had the occasional shutdown from out of nowhere, instant power off. Here are my system specs

AMD 5200+ @ 2.61ghz (200.9x13) 1000mhzHT - Zalman 9500CNPS heatsink

Foxconn C51XEM2AA 590SLI Mainboard

Antec 650 Earthwatt PSU

Gskill f2-6400CL4-1GBHK 2X1Gb

WD 160gb sata 10,000rpm HD

BFG 7600gt, factory OC to 580mhz

I really don't know what else to do, temp readouts are completely fine!

CPU- 33-35 idle, 50-55 100% load
Mainboard- 40 to 50C
GPU- 50C idle, 60-65C load
Ram - No way to tell, but the heat spreaders do not feel hot.

Strange thing also is, i have OC'd to 3012mhz before and the stability is the same as factory!

Anyone have ANY suggestions? my only shot in the dark is maybe the MB is getting to hot @ 45-50C?

First I would check all your power connections on the motherboard. Second don't bother overclocking at all with amd processors Your gain per damage to the system risk is not worth it at all. I was an amd user for a long time myself. Flash your motherboard to the latest bios.....then if you still have the same problem check your power supply stability...you may have a dud

Sorry for the data i posted but, i took those reading at 3.02ghz @ 1.45v (stock which i am running now is 1.35v) so im loading up at 45-50 max.

And yes, even at stock speed on all hardware i get shut offs. Today I have been running with the side off my case and my mobo is around 41C just surfing the net. nforce chipset is 51C.

I am thinking of applying AS5 to the north and southbridge heatinks, as i think it *may* (?) be a MoBo temp related problem. to me 41C with the side off is just too hot on MB idle.

Jackie*- Checked my new antec PS with a DMM, all voltages/amps are good, connections are secure

I also ordered an Antec 900 case which will be here in a couple of days, although my case now has decent airflow. This still has me pulling my hair out though....should a nforce 590 chipset/mobo run that hot?

first thing, reset everything to its stock speed, and test to see if the problem disappears, then try swapping out components if you can, e.g. try someone else's power supply to see if you have some problem there.

@ spuddy ~

Thanks for the reply

Problem happens @ stock speeds and voltages. I have used 2 seperate PSU's, a 450w (old) and a 650w (new). I have also tested thier outputs with a digital multi meter. They are both good.

Do you have any knowledge of mainboards temp ranges and chipset temp ranges?

A strange note, everest shows my +12v to be outputting 9.12...but i have tested the ATX connector and it is indeed getting 12.28 volts to the MoBo.

Clear cmos, load bios defaults, some settings may trigger a shutdown when temps are too high.

Ati & nvidia mobo chipsets can heat up pretty high. nividia is the worse offender. 70'c is not uncommon. Yes, just northbridge. I think you can try opening the side panel & blowing a table fan on the whole mobo. I think either the chipsets or the mosfets overheat.

i was going to suggest gpu... i have a heat problem with mine right now, load temps get past 90 and then i get random restarts.

auscanzukus is probably right about the chipset though, that seems like an overlooked heat point in most systems especiall if its oc'd
