Cut power supply cables

Hi forum,

I have a non-modular PSU, and I cut the extra unused cables off of it in order to make room in the back of my case for cable management. I ended each individual wire with electrical tape in each sleeve, and then I wrapped each bundle in two layers of extra tape. I did this without fully considering the aspects of the modification, and now i'm pretty anxious about using my computer. Can someone link heat-shrink wraps or wire nuts I can use to better insulate these wires? My theory is that if the cables are ended in wire nuts or heat-shrink, they will be just the same as having unused cables in your case, except for the fact that they won't be used ever again. Is this true? If not, how dangerous is this situation for me and my computer?

thanks

I have not done this, however...if you have clipped the wires neatly, and (as you say) each individual wire is insulated from contact with other wires or with case metal, there is no reason this should be dangerous. At worst, you have prevented any expansion of your system by other devices needing power.
If this fails in a catastrophic manner will you post some pictures? For science?

So is this idiotic modification actually dangerous? or are you just making jokes? I didn't think i'd get this kind of response.

No, I'm actually not joking.

Power is still applied to those cables. Fine...cut and terminate with wire nuts, whatever. Done wrong, and you will let the magic smoke out. And there are far more ways to do it wrong, than to do it right.

Or, buy a PSU that does not offend your sensibilities with extra cables hanging out.

Thanks for being less vague. This is the best answer so far. I wish I didn't pick a solution.
