my new 500gb hard drive says cyclic redundancy check when i try to create a partition should i return it or can i fix it

Since it's new you should return it and they'll give you a new one. You could try fixing it with the right software but this wouldn't make this drive more reliable. It could break again in the future and you'll loose some valuable data. Before returning it, you could try testing it with another sata cable, just in case this issue is caused by a bad cable.

Hey there, @Alfred17!

I'd also second @panathas' opinion on RMA-ing the hard drive, since it's a brand new one. You can get in touch with the reseller's or the manufacturer's customer support for assistance with the procedure. You can do some further troubleshooting by yourself as well, though. You could try connecting the HDD to another working computer and see if you will be able to partition & format it from there. I'd also try using a different SATA port on the motherboard and also a different SATA cable just to be sure that the HDD is the source of your troubles.

In the future, always make sure you back up your files to avoid any potential data loss. Duplicates in various storage locations/drives will definitely keep your peace of mind! :)

Good luck!

i tried it with my computer and it didnt work

Then return it since this drive seems to have a hardware problem. It's the better decision. Sometimes you can receive bad PC parts. That's why RMAs and warranties exist after all. Good luck.

I returned it and got a new one it works now thanks
