Dahua DVR only allowing LAN connections

As the title suggests, my Dahua DVR is only allowing connections from the LAN. All of the required ports are forwarded correctly but it says 'Login timeout' when trying to connect to it. The username and password that is being used to try and connect to it is correct and multiple usernames and password have been tried. Anyone got a solution to this?

This might be a security feature (or greedy company wanting you to buy another product / service).

You can set up a VPN server (or check whether your router does support it already).
