DAS/NAS for Plex/external storage?

Hey everyone, I have a question... I have an FTP site for friends and myself where we store edited videos and other stuff of the sort. I also use Plex (video streaming app). Currently, I'm using a desktop I converted into a Windows Server 2012r2 rig. I'm running out of physical and virtual room, and have no redundancy on this "server", so, I'm looking to get an external RAID solution. I'm tossing back and forth between Drobo and Synology, as well as NAS or DAS.
I'd say NAS would be easier and faster, but I don't believe it supports NTFS permissions, which I require (each user has a separate "home" folder, as well as a little more complex sharing permissions. Basically, being able to control permissions from my Windows Server is a requirement.
What would you guys think? I'm network, hardware, and software savvy, so I can handle most mid-level stuff.

Yea AD/DNS doesn't take up a huge amount of usage honestly. Not as much as you think.

You can go with a drobo but not sure how their users's are synced.

for the Synology it won't sync local accounts. Had to be connected to a AD but after that is really easy. You just log into the Web portal on the admin account and you set permissions just like you do in windows and also people can have access to those files remotely so long as quickconnect is setup.
Well if you have a Server 2012 and you get a Synology you can have it sync the Active Directory and then log into it and change the file permission there. pretty easy.

My GF's dad has a Drobo but I have never used one. The RAID technology they use is pretty cool but not me.

I am more of a DAS person. I would rather have a good RAID card on my server (Which runs windows 7) and manage everything there. That is just me. it is just easier to deal wit.

The Synology is good also if you want people with remote access to files either though the app or web interface. I have a client who has one and it has been working well for them. If they just want a client who can View a file they can just email them a link to a file or a folder to look at stuff.

One thing I forgot to mention is that my Server doesn't actually run Active Directory. I'm thinking I might end up biting the bullet anyway and installing the role. I use local accounts, so AD/DNS are not hogging any resources.
Can Synology work with local accounts the same way? I'd imagine not...

I like to make things more complicated than they really need to be, but I really like how simple Drobo is. I'd rather have a RAID card in my server, but like I said, I'm just out of physical room, as well as power connectors.
I know Synology, Western Digital, and other companies have their own cloud based stuff, but I kinda like to keep everything managed by my Win2k12 box, since I also have IIS, which I also have permissions set, based on user accounts.
