what are the *********.dat files in the c drive all about ?

Thare are dat(a) files. They can be binary or they can be text. You can
also have dat files which are video but that is not usual. Usually they are
just data files. Used for the purpose of handing data over to an executable
or an installer. Not normally anything to be concerned about and should
have no association. Thus the generic Windows icon is what they should
show.

The .dat extension is used in a variety of different ways by
different applications. It's *not* a single standard file type.
So unless you can provide more specific information about exactly
*which* .dat files you're asking about, nobody can give you
accurate specific information.
