Hello,

I am new to all this, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

I am thinking of switching to Cingular service. I would like a plan
such that I can send pictures, as well as access the internet(i.e yahoo
mail, instant messenger) from my phone as well as to allow me to
connect my laptop or pda to my phone and access the internet that way.

I am not reall clear on what GPRS is or I have seen the term tethering
and am not sure what that is either. Besides my voice plan, what would
I need to order to meet what I am looking for and what is the cost for
this? Will a medianet package cover this and if so, which one, or do I
need additional services?

Again, any help you can offer would be greatly appreciated

For starters here is a basic definition:

General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) is a new nonvoice value added service
that allows information to be sent and received across a mobile telephone
network.

Go here for more detailed information:

Tethering means to attach your cellular phone to a computer or PDA and use
is like a modem to access data services provided by your cellular company or
an ISP.

If you want to use Cingular to connect to the Internet you need a MediaNet
package. They range from $2.99 to $24.99 per month depending on how much
data you transfer. The $24.99 plan is for unlimited useage and if you're
planning on doing a lot of email and sending pictures around you'll probably
want the unlimited plan. You can get the deails here
https://www.cingular.com/media/media_net_purchase

If you want to use your existing ISP, like earthlink or AOL you need to make
sure your account is provisioned for CSD, this will allow you to dial your
ISP's local number and connect that way although the speed will potentially
much lower.

Hope this helps

So a laptop can be tethered to a phone using the $24 plan, rather than the
$79 plan? And the data rates are the same?
