Data Corruption Problems When Flashing to a Flash USB Drive (Windows 7)

So I'm downloading an image of an ubuntu-based operating system called smOS from simplemining.net and it's 1.4GB in size. I've got a 16GB Sandisk 3.0 USB Flash drive.

The directions state:
Download to a folder the 1.4GB image file
Install Etcher and use Etcher to flash to the USB drive.

I do this, get a successful flash notification when it's complete, I then use the flash to boot up my mining rig and although it boots and runs... I get errors during the and this is restricting some of the features that I need.

Is there an alternative, more better way of flashing to the USB?
I've got access to a Windows 7 Laptop and also a 2014 Macbook Pro

It is a zipped image file. Is Rufus better than Etcher? Etcher is working, even verifies after flashing but somehow keeps missing files.

i don't know i am just offering an alternative tool. so you can try rufus and if it still does not work you either have a bad image file or you are not putting the image on the drive the right way

I see.
Is there a way to do the download of the image file and flash to USB through Terminal code on my Macbook Pro? I believe this would be a much safer and stable solution.
