Heyo!

Like the title of the thread says, I am getting a Cyclic Redundancy Check error and don't know how to fix the issue. Wanted to play the new battle royal game Apex Legends, but during the download it failed and gave the message saying the VC++ runtime redistributable package could not be installed. I then tried to manually install the missing package (Visual C++ 2010 SP1 Redistributable Package (x64)) from the games install folder, but the install froze and after a bit said "Data error (cyclic redundancy check)". I downloaded both Visual C++ 2010 SP1 x64 and x86 packages from Microsoft's download center and tried to to install them but came up with the same data error.

I've tried so far chkdsk C: /F /X /R and sfc /scannow in cmd with administrator permission, but the problem still persists. I'm up to date with Windows 10 drivers and Graphics card drivers. Any help is much appreciated.

A cyclic redundancy check is a quick and dirty way to detect if a file has changed since the CRC was originally generated. Normally a CRC error indicates a file has become corrupted. So it can't be fixed (although repeated retries may result in a slightly different read from the hard drive which returns the correct file).

However, if it's happening to every file you download, that's usually a sign you have a virus infection. The virus appends itself to downloaded executables so it will be run and can spread whenever you double-click the executable. The addition of the virus to the executable file makes it fail the CRC check, since it's no longer identical to the original file that generated the CRC.

So try running virus and malware scans.

Darn. I guess ill start to backup my files. How long you think a drive that is "dead" can run for? I have never had problems with my drive in the past. I tested it and can uninstall other Visual C++ Redistributable Packages and install them just fine from the Microsoft download center, just not the 2010 SP1 packages with the data error.

@Solandri I ran a full system virus scan earlier today and nothing came up. None of my downloads have this error, it just seems to be with the 2010 SP1 packages.

It will "run", right up until it dies.
Might be 1 hour from now, might be 2 weeks. It might die as I'm writing this.

The time for backups is before things go bad.

Not a solution, but found it interesting. If I run any of the 2010 SP1 package installs and exit out of the process fast enough, and run the package download again, it installs the package. Still get the "VC++ runtime redistributable package could not be installed" message from Origin though 🙁. Backup-ed most of my important files. Thanks for helping USAFRet and Solandri.
