Here is my story. I have WD5000BEVT-11ZATO HDD. Its basically 500GB 2.5" laptop Hdd. I was using it in and external enclosure. Somehow, it stopped working. I have been trying look for solution since a while. Here what I have done so far.
I first tried to see if my laptops will recognize this hdd. To see, I have tried 3 different laptop and 3 different usb connector board. I hear sound from the laptop when I connect it but laptop doesn't recognize item. Nothing in the My Computer section.I went to the Disk Manager section. It appear sometime as Disk1 but when I say initialize, nothing happens and gives error. The hdd was giving clicking sound from the head for couple of second than it stops. I used couple of partition recovery programs and also WD diagnostic but none of them realize hdd. Also HDD regenerate doesn't see it under to DOS.
So, I went online and purchase exactly same model (parts/repair one) Item arrived and model number and pcp board number was also exactly same. I used partition programs and 3 different connector. One of them worked and recognized hdd that I p;purchased. I used data recovery program to see if it will be recognized and guess what, I found 12TB total data in the 500GB HDD
. Anyway, most of them raw files and nothing major inside, I formatted it through disk manager and it worked. Then whenever I plug to laptop, it see right away.
Alright here is what happened later. Before opening my hdd I looked for other solutions but finally decided to replace pcb board at least to see if it will help my own hdd. However it didnt. Seems both my hdd and purchased one has good pcb. Finally I watched couple of video to see how I can replace platters etc. I opened the one I purchased first, took out platters, opened my hdd and took out my platters too and placed them back. The clicking sound gone from my hdd and it seemed it was working normal but pc still didnt recognize it. Then I decided to place other platters to my own hdd but it didnt work as well. I want to replace them back again and confused how to place them back. I mean which way of the platter side comes down or up.
As I result, I destroyed heads when I place them back. That reading head didnt place correctly and it bended. Second one happened same and I couldnt place it back. For those who knows what I am talking about is that when I take out platter, there is plastic part that twin heads slides in and out to the platters, you need to pull back that plastic to take out platters. I did but when I place them back and push that plastic back, heads/readers didnt sit in that plastic correctly and bended. Both of them happened same.
Now I am assuming both hdd platters and pcb boards are ok. My questions:
I will purchase used but good hdd again maybe 1 or more.
1. Should I purchase exactly same model? It is WD5000BEVT-11ZATO Scorpio.
There are also WD5000BEVT-22ZATO or WD5000BEVT-00ZATO or WD5000BEVT-22A0RT0
Are these matters or its ok as long as it is WD5000BEVT.
2. Can I purchase 250GB scorpio hdd and try to fix it, will that reader can read my 500gb platters? Any difference please for those who knows.
3. These platters seems like CD media, isnt there any invented device that we can place in it and save our data. Come on its 2015. Engineer should invent a device and external cd reader and we should be able to place it in and save our datas. Many people suffering with these type problems.
4. Placing those platters in any side will be ok? Down or upside down seems same. If I forgot how to take out, is it ok to place in any side? Anyone knows please?
5. When I receive new hdd, I am planning to open it and place my platters to see if I can save my data. Any suggestion please?
If there is anything that I didnt mentioned here, please let me know, I will answer.
Its long thread and I tried give as many details as I can and am thanking whoever helps.
Thank you.
