Data Transfer from Vista to Windows 7

My hard disk on Vista 32-bit is barely holding up and want to get new pc with windows 7. Want to transfer all possible data and read about Windows "Easy Transfer" download. Was going to get my 1st external drive for this task and wanted to know-- which would be easier and simpler to use to transfer data-- The USB "Easy Transfer" Cable or an external hard disk to move data? I am computer illiterate and will be doing this myself. I'm terrified to even attempt it but have no choice. Thanks so much for any help or direction.

That ^ is not a good thing to get for a computer novice.

Get an external drive, you can also use that for backups with the new computer. Make sure you read the documentation on the program you will be using fully before starting anything http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/products/features/windows-easy-transfer

Thank you both so so much for your help. For me it seems that easy transfer is the way to go. Hopefully it will be Easy as described. Thank goodness for this site as I spent days searching for help till I couldn't see straight. Thank u for responding to the easy (for you) questions as well as the technical complicated ones.
