I have deleted my friends laptop partitions while trying to install windows 10. What is the best way to retrieve data from the hard disk?

Please give us a step by step list of what you did to end up with this result.
As detailed as you can.
Booted windows 10 installation through UEFI, he had an old windows 7 on his computer. I then tried to install but his drive was MBR. While trying to convert through cmd, I accidently used the clean option on his entire drive instead on the partition itself. So now I have drive with unallocated memory.

Yes and yes. I am thinking of removing the drive from the laptop and connecting it to my desktop and try to use the stellar data recovery software.
Do you think that's a good idea?
If you were installing Win 10, whatever was on there would have been gone anyway.
What critical data is on this drive?

For "stellar"? I've never used it.
And given their internet wide spam tactics, I never would.

Possibly Autopsy.

But after a clean function, you will almost certainly not get anything back in an actual usable condition.

Sorry, but it has to be said...

That is 2 levels of fail:
  1. Having that data residing on only a single drive.
  2. Not having a backup of the data on it before starting a full OS install.
Hey, i got lots of the data back, not sure how much of it or if it is corrupted but most of it seems fine so far. I used R-studio recovery program. Took me about an hour and a half to scan the 500 gb drive.
