Hi guys,

I wiped out my 2010 imac 21.5inch with DBAN so now I'm trying to re-install OSX.

So the question is can I install El Capitan straight up or do I have to install from lower versions like Snow leopard or something up?

I tried making an El Captian Bootable USB installer but its stuck on a white screen for like couple hours so I tried using snow leopard to install. Using snow leopard goes further a little bit with an apple loading and the loading wheel but then after like 2 mins the loading wheel freezes and gets stuck.

So what should I do?

Thanks in advance!

Tony

EDIT: Hey guys actually the internet recovery option works I just need to press cmd + r and I've got to the stage where it asks me to install El Captian but its not detecting any hard drives at all just empty and the continue option is greyed out since I haven't chosen a hard drive.

Solution
you'll need to connect it via ethernet to the net and do a internet recovery, then upgrade to el capt.

should help you: http://www.idownloadblog.com/2016/02/25/how-to-start-up-your-mac-in-internet-recovery-mode/

also it will prob install lion if thats what it came with. I had trouble with one mac and I turned on logging and found it couldn't verify some pkgs turns out it was a ram stick that went bad, removed it and install went smoothly.

It was an unwanted imac due to an upgrade in a business and they gave it to me telling me it still works but they had to wipe out the hard drive because of sensitive data.

and yeah I don't see the internet recovery option.

Is the Snow Leopard disk a retail copy? A disk that was supplied with a different model of Mac won't work. What other Macs do you have access to (I presume that you do as you were able to download El Capitan from the Apple Store)?
