9800pro 256meg was meant to compete with the 5800ultra which used DDRII, it's just marketing trick. There's no real advantage in DDRII except heat, and being able to clock a bit higher. The 9800XT is meant to compete with 5950ultra which uses 2.0ns DDR1 memory, so 9800XT just used 2.2ns Hynix DDR1 memory. This way the card runs much cooler. And the performance has been increased because DDR1 has lower latency than DDR2.

-Intel PIV 2.6C @ 3.575G -Asus P4P800 -OCZ Copper 2x256 4000EL memory @ 275mhz 3-4-4-8 -Sapphire 9800np @ 432/760 -SB audigy -120G Maxtor Diamond Plus9 S-ATA150 hdd -450 Enermax PSU

Also they found that the GDDRII chips on the R9800Pro-256 were having heat issues (despite that they were meant to be cooler running).

If there is good DDR1 out there then going that route makes more sense. And GDDRII is proving to be more expensive as well than even the best DDR stuff.

Things will change, but the question is whether or not GDDRII will mature fast enough to avoid being overtaken by GDDR3 which is on the near horizon (ATI setforth the spec at the end of LAST year). As always we shall see.
