Is there really a noticeable difference in the two speeds enough to warrant the price difference? Right now I can either get another GB of 5300 for 18 bucks at newegg to bring me up to 2 GB of 5300, or just get 2 GB of brand new 6400 for about 30 bucks.

Comments/suggestions?

I would prefer the pc2-6400 if it has lower latency. Plus I would rather buy a 2x2gb kit than just a single 2gb module. I think you would notice more the performance boost by getting more ram than the increase in ram speed. Though ddr2-800 is obviously faster than ddr2-667.

On desktop usage the 5300's have very very little to no difference with 6400's. With games there is a small performance difference, as apache said, it'd be ~5%.

The advantage though with the single stick 2GB is that you free up the other slot adding the possiblity to make it 4GB later. With the 2x1GB option you eat up both slots and upgrading means you have to get rid of those two. Of course if your motherboard has 4 slots, you could do whichever you want.
