DDR3 backward compatible?

Im basically looking to upgrade my motherboard but i dont want to spend alot initially. Currently i have ocz reaper ddr2 800mhz, and im looking to upgrade my board but the one im looking at is ddr3 1066/1333 etc so will my ram work in the new board?

why?

i dont see a problem with having the bios detect the ddr version and switching the voltage accordingly...or even a physical switch on the board.

unless its base structure of the nb i dont see a problem with it having compatibility with all 5 versions.

im assuming its cost, an extra feature that isn't needed and would take to much extra time to develop/manufacture.
