DDR3 in DDR3L slots on a NUC?

So I've got a pair of 4GB Hynix DDR3 SO-DIMMs lying around, and I'm planning on putting them in a NUC I'm getting soon - only thing is, the NUC is specified for 1.35v DDR3L.

Now, I've searched around and the general consensus is that there is none: YMMV.

Just wanted to ask if anyone else here has tried this (maybe not on this specific NUC, but NUCs in general)? And will it cause damage to the NUC or the RAM if it ends up not working?

Thanks - I'll just pick up a new stick then.

And damn, RAM got a ton cheaper recently - I remember 8GB of DDR3-1333/1600 (single stick or kit) used to cost around $70ish not too long ago. Did something happen, or is this just natural?

Nothing should be damaged. You're undervolting the RAM. It may not be stable, but I've never heard of a case where under-volting caused hardware damage.

The opposite case, on the other hand, may result in damage (maybe). Memory that's specced for DDR3L 1.35v put into a board that gives it 1.5v may get fried. That being said, many DDR3L modules are designed to take 1.5v as well because it's a common mistake.

The drop in RAM price is natural. There's enough supply for the demand, so the prices are balancing. DDR3 will slowly get cheaper for a little while longer as DDR4 gains more adoption in the market, and as production methods improve and reduce duds in the yield. After a few years the price for new DDR3 will creep up as it's production is tapered off completely.
