hey so I had for a while now 2x2gb HyperX DDR3 1.65v running into my system so I bought a Crucial module 1x8gb DDR3L both running at 1600 mhz , CAS latency 11 , my mobo msi B85M-E33

I read that its not wise to mix ram with different voltages, but I said what the heck so I go into bios set ram voltage to 1.35v to match the ddr3l one and I place them both and I boot it up into bios and they are recognized , I log into windows & I see that I have 10gb, cpu-z also reads that they work in dual channel but the other things I didn't understood , clocks etc.

But then I removed the 2gb module cause I am afraid in the long run it'll damage memory controller or some other components and I said its not worth the risk but it still erks me to have 2 extra gb of ram and I also read this http://www.dell.com/support/article/ro/ro/robsdt1/SLN153768/what-is-ddr3l-memory??lang=EN

so I am confused about this whole thing .. some people say mixing diff voltages = bad , & some people say its ok ...

Solution
5 minutes of leaving the PC on is not a stability test.

Run some demanding benchmarks and see if it crashes.

Download and run Prime 95 and see if it crashes.
If you are going to do it, running them at low voltage is the way to go. You won't damage anything that way. That said I would highly doubt this will remain stable, that memory is significantly different. You shouldn't have bought that DDR3L module, maybe you can return it?

You won't damage anything by under-volting but your 1.65V RAM is clearly not guaranteed to be stable at 1.35V. If it is working for you and you aren't getting stability issues, then there is no harm in leaving it at that.

DDR3L DRAM is compatible with regular DDR3's 1.5V, so you may want to aim for that middle-ground instead if you want to continue using your 2GB modules.

It would be too much of a hassle to send it back & on the site it only wrote DDR3 without the L

well I forgot to mention that my motherboard has only 2 ram slots , so it would be dumb to go back to 4 gb 😀
stability issues as in what, crashes ? as long as I don't fry anything I can give it a try for a longer run
When I used them together & left the pc on for like 5 mins just to check if it works

well I am using the 8gb ddr3l as we speak, did you leave the voltage on auto in bios ?
