I have a 8gb 1600 ddr3l ram stick and my hp sleekbook 14 has 2x DDR3 slots I was wondering if the ddr3l ram would work in it ?

Thanks in advance

Solution

DDR3L modules are backwards compatible with DDR3 by design.

Manufacturers use the same integrated circuits for DDR3 and DDR3L. The highest quality ICs are tested for operating at 1.35 volts and are branded as DDR3L if they run properly. Other than that, there's no difference between them.

However, you must make sure they are SODIMM, not the regular DIMM size used by desktops:

If they are SODIMM, then there is absolutely no problem in using them!

hi,
i just got a 4gb ddr3l 1600mhz ram for my sleekbook 15" and installed it
earlier i had 2gb ddr3 1600mhz and an empty slot.
Now my system is displaying just 4gb ram.
Could you please help me get around this

Thankyou

Mixing RAM is hit or miss at best. Even two different sticks of RAM from the same manufacturer may not work together. That is why manufacturers sell RAM in kits of 2x4GB, 4x4GB, etc. that have been tested to work together.

- If you do try mixing, picking sets w/ same speed, same CAS timings, same vendor, same module supplier presents you with best shot at having it work.
- Even same vendor, same model is no guarantee.... Corsair Vengeance pro used Hynix modules up to version 4.51 after that they used a cheaper supplier.

Making two sets work together may require loosening timings, dropping speed, lowering CPU overlcock, increasing voltage or a combination of those

The best you can do is:

1. Reseat the RAM.
2. Place the 2GB stick in slot 1 and the 4GB in slot 2.
3. Place the 4GB stick in slot 1 and the 2GB in slot 2.
4. Test each stick individually in each slot.

If nothing works, then the best you can do is sell your current RAM and buy a set of 2x4GB sticks or a single 8GB stick that will work for sure. DDR3L will run at DDR3 voltages if it is put in a DDR3 slot, essentially acting as normal DDR3 memory, so that should not be the issue.
