I got my new computer built and am using the GSkill DDR4-3000Mhz Ripsaws on an ASUS Z170-K motherboard (i5-6600k). I went into BIOS and enabled the XMP profile. When I reboot, I just get flashing lights on my case. I cleared the power and rebooted and get a message that overclocking failed.
So I did some reading and one person was saying how the System Agent Voltage needs to be tweaked in order to get higher speeds on the DDR4.I kept messing with that voltage by 0.05 increments. It finally booted!
It does seem a tad bit faster, but I decided to fire up CPU-Z to see what it said. It is showing my Core Speed at around 820MHz and on the memory tab it shows my DRAM frequency at 1510MHz.
When I fire up GIMP, the Core Speed jumps up to almost 4.2GHz momentarily, but the memory frequency stays the same (which makes sense).
Since I am a newbie to overclocking, I am not sure how to interpret these results. Why is the DRAM frequency so low? Why doesn't the XMP profile work out of the box without modification? Is it possible that my tweaks have actually slowed down the frequency?
Anyone else have any luck working with DDR4 RAM at higher than 2133MHz on an ASUS board? Any advice is welcome.
EDIT: Forgot to mention that I contacted ASUS about this first and this was their reply:
"The default RAM speed of DDR4 is 2188. You can achieve the 3000Mhz only if you overclock it. We dont recommend the customer to overclock the motherboard. It causes to damage the motherboard. I suggest you to please follow below links for your reference.
