So, out of curiousity I was looking at the Asus ROG Maximus VIII Extreme Assembly. It's specs
state that the memory supported includes a range of DDR4 speeds.

Memory Standard
DDR4 3866*(*O.C.)/ 3800*/ 3733*/ 3600*/ 3500*/ 3466*/ 3400*/ 3333*/ 3300*/ 3200*/ 3000*/ 2800*/ 2666*/ 2400*/ 2133

So my question is this. Would I buy memory that is at 2133 and overclock it to 3866 (if possible), or do I just buy memory at 3866? This is all more for research than anything as I would assume the concept applies to other motherboards as well. Thank you for assisting with yet another question I'm sure you've all answered hundreds of times before.

Solution
You don't need memory that fast, barely will notice the difference, and most RAM at 2133 mhz won't OC to 3866mhz anyways, just buy some like 2800/3000 and that will be fine.

It's mostly for reference. I'm not building anytime soon. But I was always curious. Thanks for the info!
