DDR4 or DDR3 for Gaming?

I have been out of the loop for a while and will be upgrading in the next few months. Part of that is the Mobo and RAM. Should I be looking at DDR4? I have only read one thing about it and it said there was no real use for it in gaming. More for industrial use. Is this accurate? If I go DDR3 is there any use in getting anything over 1600? What kind of CAS timings should I be looking at as well. Thanks.

DDR 3 or DDR 4 depends on the other parts in the system, not which is 'better' for gaming.
The CPU and motherboard will dictate DDR3 or DDR4.

As I said I will be upgrading in the future so I am not sure what I will have then. Still researching, but currently I have a GA-78LMT-USB3 6.0 mobo, FX6300, 8gb RAM, and a 1050 ti.

"Should I be looking at DDR4?"
When your motherboard requires it. But don't try to get it, thinking you'll get a huge boost.

I still use DDR3 with my Skylake CPU (because my motherboard takes DDR3 and I got a great deal on the motherboard).
Instead of RAM...
Focus on the CPU and GPU picks first.
CPU will dictate the socket type you need on the motherboard, which in-turn will dictate if you need DDR4.

Yes, the boost you get from RAM speed increases are minimal. (In gaming)

I would get the 1600MHz if your gonna get DDR3. (A more common speed tends to have a lower price.)
At 1600Mhz you should try for CL (CAS) 8 or less. (CL9 is very common for that speed)

For budget reasons what if I get a single 8gb stick now and the exact same one in the future for dual channel. Would that work?

Yes, that works. I did that with a (2GB x 2) ram kit. Few years later, I added another kit with the same model number.
All 4 DIMMs ran great together and dual channel mode worked without issues.
