Good morning guys. I previously made a post a post about which cpu should I buy and(thanks for your answers) Im heading towards ryzen 1600(non x because i dont have money to buy extra cpu fan) My pc will consist of:

CPU: Ryzen 1600
GPU: rx 480 4gb
Motherboard:Asus prime b350+
Ram:?
PSU: Corsair cs650 watt 80+ gold
Windows 10
Case:NZXT source 340 Midi tower

Right now I have a stupid dual core but I can play demanding games at 1080p on ultra without a problem(rx 480 is pretty powerfull ^^) I imagine with the ryzen I can make this pc last for 2-3 years?(Keep in mind I wont move at 1440p anytime soon)

So back to our matter, here in Greece the ram prices are high af... Im not planning to take 16gb ram for 1080p. Also I have a very strict budget. Those are my choices: (Apologies for the greek site, but that's from where im going to get pc parts)

1)https://www.skroutz.gr/s/6524187/Corsair-Value-Select-8GB-DDR4-2133MHz-CMV8GX4M1A2133C15.html

2)https://www.skroutz.gr/s/7299955/HyperX-Fury-8GB-DDR4-2400MHz-HX424C15FBK2-8.html

3)https://www.skroutz.gr/s/8358288/Corsair-Vengeance-LPX-8GB-DDR4-2400MHz-CMK8GX4M1A2400C16.html

So my budget is max 90-95 euros... Here is the thing. I heard that higher frequenecy equals to better performance? But a 3200mhz ram stick costs 140+ euros! Im concerned... and sad because some say that with such low freq rate(2133-2400) ryzen wont maximize its performance. Is that true? Please, shed some light upon this situation. Thanks for your time!

Solution

Yes, though that is totally dependant on the GPU and games as at 1440p during those test, the GPU was bottlenecking.

I suggest going for dual channel configuration aswell, as you would see ~25% framerate increase in Witcher 3, ~20% framerate increase with GTA V, ~20% framerate increase with overwatch, and another large gain for PUBG.

In terms of DIMM speed, Witcher 3 finds the biggest increase of framerates of ~9% from 2133Mhz to 2400MHz, with every 600Mhz step above that resulting in a 3-5% framerate increase. GTA 5 sees a ~10% performance increase going from 2133 to 2666, and ~10% increase from 2666MHz to 3200MHz...

Try looking at the graphs, for ryzen it clearly shows continued improvement.

nah im fine with 1080p,that means shall I go with 2400 mhz?

That's not how it works at all. Resolution has zero impact on the ram and CPU. The only component resolution affects is the GPU.

Ram speed only makes a difference in games when the CPU is the limiting factor. If the gpu is the limiting factor('bottleneck'), ram speeds will not make a difference.

The reason you saw different results at different resolutions is likely due to gpu bottleneck at the higher resolutions. Which means at lower resolutions, ram should have more of impact on performance (not less).

I strongly encourage everyone reading to look at the link I posted before.

OP, which exact games do you intend to play.

For casual games:Total war:Warhammer 2 Witcher 3,Gta v,AC: Origins,Shadow of War etc...
For competitive games: Csgo,Overwatch,World of Warcraft,PUBG

Overwatch sees a ~13% average FPS increase from 2133 to 2666, and less noticeable results going upwards of 2666MHz. PUBG I've seen takes very large effects from higher frequency ram, upwards of 150% minimum framerate increase going from 2133MHz to 3200MHz (this is found in one scenario, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B20sgr-zgj0).

I suggest this kit of 2x8GB of DDR4 3200MHz for 91.07€ https://www.skroutz.gr/s/9332806/Crucial-Ballistix-Elite-8GB-DDR4-3200MHz-BLE2C4G4D32AEEA.html

Thank you so much!

is rx 480 going to bottleneck my cpu?
