just about to buy a video card (6670 ddr5) and my current is ddr3. A newbie question but they are the same format right? either will work with the same motherboard etc?

Solution
GPU's use their own type of dedicated RAM.Because of this it isn't tied into the system memory at all which means they can increase the speeds a lot.DDR5 is just a very fast version of DDR3 dedicated to GPU's.It doesn't matter what type of RAM you have and the GPU's VRAM because they don't share any of the same resources.

It will work.
