A few days ago my rig BSODed in NFS Shift and then refused to boot. Switching the 4pin power connector fixed the problem. Today, I was listening to some music when suddenly there was a "krrrrr" sound from the headphones, followed by complete system freeze up, followed by a black screen. On a friends suggestion, I tried pulling out the CPU. CPU was stuck to the heatsink- thermal paste had solidified, was like frikkin' granite. I noticed some pins were bent.Dont think the pins were bent from pulling out the CPU, they were bent sideways, not upwards as one would expect if it was from forcible ejection. What should I do? Will AMD replace the chip?

Hi madass,

the CPU died a death that's for sure. You can try to get it replaced if it's still under warranty but you need to get those bent pins straightened. Tell your supplier that the CPU was working perfectly fine then your PC suddenly got frozen up. Never come up again. It worth a try! Good luck! 😉

Probably not. From personal experience i know its difficult to get your CPU with bent pins replaced. They go for "not enough protection and causion mumbo jumbo".
Although I may be wrong and u might get lucky. You should definetely contact them.

Good Luck

They will probably void the warranty at the store since you tried to take it apart your self. The bent pins are probably a result of the heatsink being stuck which tends to happen when you try to take a heatsink off when the computer is cold. You better try to bend those pins back with a credit card real careful and make it look like you never touched it before bringing it back to the store.

They replaced my 4870 even though I took that apart as well....

Did you place it back in the case like nothing happened or did you hand it to them and say this is the problem?

That is good advice straiten the pins, place the cpu back in and then bring it to the shop. If they replace it I will most likely be faster than sending chip out to AMD.

heh samething happened with me as I pulled a X4 955 out of its socket the other day, reason being the thermal paste (arctic silver 5) was tough as glue and when i tried to remove the heatsink, the CPU came out with it, a pin was bent in the process, as i tried to straighten it, it fell off...

anyways, i plugged the cpu back in and it still works fine.

You got lucky the pin that broke was probably a ground pin. To prevent the CPU from being stuck onto the heatsink its always good to take off the heatsink while its hot if the PC doesn't boot a hair dryer will do the trick to warm it up to make the thermal compound a little easier to remove.

I completely agree with SAAIELLO. I always run Prime95 or something for a while, shut down, and remove the HSF while the CPU is still warm. I've never had a problem with the HSF sticking to the CPU when it's warmed up first. It also helps to twist the HSF slightly before attempting to remove it.
