dead hd 5870 shappire

Hi guys,
From what I googled I understood that this is very cummon phenomena. I want to make it very clear I did an oc for 1280mhz from 1200 without changing it voltage. Moreover when it didn't work as I turned the comp on I saw a big huge dust balls on the Colling heats, I supposed that didn't make the fan stopped but it certainly hurt the air flow.. When I opened the card out after a use of three years it hadn't any burned signs and the resistors or the capacitors didn't seem strange.. I bought the r9 280x,and I want to be sure the HD 5870 is dead,is there any way? Since I want to do a crossfire connection between them

You can't CrossFire 5000 generation and R generation. You can only Crossfire 7000 series with R series.

The only way to know - plug in the card and try to see if it posts a signal.

Can I make it assistant to my r9?

Depends on what you understand by "assistant". With nVidia cards you can put an older generation to calculate only PhysX - like an assistant. So in a game without PhysX, that 2nd card is pretty much useless. AMD has only Crossfire. You can't have an "assistant", you can only have 2 cards sharing the load. The 5000 is a completely different architecture from the R series. You cant stack them up.

The R9 280x is a much more powerful gpu anyways. It will handle 1080p max settings just fine by it's self.
