Hi i have been helping someone upgrade there sons pc as they said it would no longer start up.

it was running an intel celeron something LGA1155 (no model number was given) and they have put in an i5 3470 of the same socket.

they also added an msi 660ti 2gb (or so they said i haven't been show the box just a quick glance at the card which was huge so i assume they were right).

the pc had a 300w psu and they say the swapped it for a 550w BEFORE adding the new parts but i see no evidence of this and now the pc starts for 5-10 seconds then shuts down and restarts.

also the has very likely been thermal paste on both the cpu and cpu socket before they asked for help as they attempted this with little or no real knowledge of the inside of a pc.

the system basics are

gigabyte GA-H6TM-S2PV mbo
i5 3470 cpu
coolermaster 550w 80+gold psu
micro-atx OEM case

does anyone have any ideas as to what may be going wrong? i have tried the old cpu, clearing cmos and have run out of things to try without risking further damage.

any help would be much appreciated

So you're telling me that even the old CPU is not working anymore?

I was going to suggest always flash the bios BEFORE installing new parts, especially a new CPU or memory to make sure the BIOS will support the new parts.

But yeah, if you say it doesn't work even with the older CPU. Then I would probably try the old Celeron with the old PSU too just to make sure it's not the PSU. Just remove and re-apply thermal paste correctly just to be sure. But if it keeps doing the same thing, it's most likely the motherboard.
