Hello, I am getting the error message 'CMOS checksum error - default loaded' when I boot my PC, and after some time the PC just freezes while still in POST or BIOS. And then the CPU fan revs up and down instead of steady.

Is my motherboard dead or is it something else?

Already did remove the battery, reseat the RAM. By removing the graphics card I got the video adapter error, which is good. And the battery still has power even if it is the original.

System:
CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E6320 1,86GHz
GPU: Asus 630gt 2GB (kepler)
MOBO: Gigabyte 945p-s3
HDD: Hitachi 320 GB
RAM: 2x1 GB ddr2 533
PSU: Corsair cx430 80+ bronze

Looking at your motherboard it says it has dual bios. I'd give forcing a BIOS re-write a go before giving up hope as this looks like a firmware issue.

Start by turning off the Computer. Next hold down the power button and wait for the PC to turn on then off keeping the button held. Then turn the computer on and boot as normal. It may take a few attempts before this prompts the BIOS to re-write from the backup.

I forgot to mention it takes about 30s from the press of the button to the bios beep, so if I try your solution, it just shuts down after 3s.

Can a dead batter cause the PC to freeze?

And some additional info. The motherboard has 1 bulging cap (been been like that for about 2y) and the PC hasn't been used since April 2013.
