Dead Pixels

Has anyone heard of a pixel on an LCD dying spontanously? I have a Hitachi 17" can't find the model number. Turned it on yesterday and on the black boot up screen noticed that on one side of the monitor I had a red pixel for no appearent reason...as long as there isn't a dark color on that side you can't see it...doesn't show up on white at all, however as soon as you have a dark color there is this red dot . I'm the only one using the thing.

Nothing you can do about that. And the manufacturer won't take it back because of one dead pixel. Sorry for you.

Yea, I know. Its just frustrating, the monitor is 2 years old, and I just now have a dead pixel showing up. I had just never heard of a pixel going bad for no reason, you know either physical trauma or being shipped that way were the only ways I'd heared of getting one.

Unfortunately it's not even uncommon for new monitors to have dead pixels. In the manufacturers warranty it is exactly stated how many and what sort of dead pixels must be tolerated. In your case however the pixel is not dead. It's just constitutively active and red... Worst case.

My new dell laptop, 3 months old, 4500 bucks has about 5 grey pixels...🙁

Are you saying we can only see dead pixels during dark screens? Is there any other way to detect dead pixels?

It depends on the nature of the "dead" pixels. There are constitutively active pixels, which can manifest in all varieties (eg red, green, blue, white...) and there are defect pixels. They would generally be grey.
