I'm building a PC and I haven't got a PSU just yet, but I have a 6 year old 300w PSU that I ripped out a Dell Vostro and had planned to use to build a different PC to the one I'm building now. Long story short the old PSU wasn't able to power the PC I planned to use it in so it's been collecting dust, I assumed it didn't work because it didn't have enough juice, but I thought since it was pulled from a working computer it wasn't dead, anyway I plugged it in to my build today and it didn't work not unexpected but my question is could it have potentially damaged my motherboard, CPU etc? I'm asking this as I did the paper clip test and the fan spins up for a little bit then dies and no it's not a fancy Eco no fan spin till x amount of load. I'm wondering if it could have given a little to my components the. Shut off potentially damaging them.

Solution
Unless there was some short or a buzz, sparks, smoke or a burn smell then there shouldn't have been any damage at all to your components, regardless, only way to find out is to get a new PSU and test the system.
Ok thanks a lot, yeah there was nothing no buzz no beep. I have a debug LED on the motherboard that should read something if power was getting to the system but there wasn't. As well I had tried the PSU in another build which it didn't work in but when I got a new unit it was fine so it's exactly the same situation as before
