Well, I'm starting to believe I just don't have what it takes to kill
this thing. I got the "ineffective weapon" message with the other ones,
but eventually I killed them, but this one doesn't seem to take much or
any damage at all. What can I do? (Not that I *have* to kill it. I've
already gotten the four items and I've escaped the room, but it'd be
nice to do it anyway.)

P.S. Is there a time-limit on the quest to investigate the Trademeet
attacks?

You need +3 weapons to hurt iron golems.
Don't bother with magic unless you have Lower Resistance.
If you have a +3 two-handed sword you can can hit the golem while
he's "stuck" in the doorway and unable to reach your character.

How did you get the loot out of the room?

There's a level 1 cleric spell called sanctuary that allows you get the
items without fighting the golems, though unfortunately you don't get
experience points for choosing this non-hack 'n' slash method.

Still, it's nice to leave gracefully. <g>

No, you can do it whenever you want.

I killed all the other golems when they came alive, and saved the iron
golem (and the other one) for last. Then I used haste on Minsc and had
him go get the last item, and then he ran out. Everyone else was waiting
outside, they killed the lesser golem. Luckily the other one can't fit
through the door, but I still feel the urge to kill it. :)

If you have Nalia with you, she has the Polymorph Self spell in her
spellbook. She can use this spell to become a +3 Harberd wielding Flind.
With this weapon you can stand in the doorway merrily whacking away at
it....it might take a while because of Nalia's low Thac0...but will work.

IIRC MMM works fine here. And cloudkill too I think, though it's been a fair
while since I played BG2.

- Flesh golems require any magical weapon.

- Clay golems require magical BLUNT weapons - you obviously made
Anomen and Minsc kill them with maces. Edged weapons such as swords,
and pointed weapons such as spears, have no effect, nor do missile
weapons - not even if they are +5. A +1 mace will hurt a Clay golem,
but a +5 sword will not.

- Stone golems require ANY weapon with +2 or greater enchantment - a
normal +1 weapon will not work.

- Iron golems require +3 weapons. One of the weapons you found in the
chamber was a +3 axe... if somebody used that, they could hurt the
golem. Trouble is, they wouldn't be very *good* at it unless you gave
them proficiency points yourself, since the only person currently in
your party that can wield axes at all is Minsc, and he doesn't start
with anything in axes. (If you put a point in axes when he reached
level 9, he can use it.)

Now, also among the four items you picked up from the golem
chamber was the Fire head of the three-headed Flail of Ages... which
happens to be, WHEN YOU HAVE COMPLETED IT, a +3 weapon. And better
still, it's a blunt weapon, so it can damage clay golems too, and be
wielded by Anomen... though he starts off with no proficiency in
flails, you can easily give him proficiency and specialisation when he
reaches higher levels. Do this - you will not regret it.

When you entered the fortress, Daleson the servant will already
have told you to find all three pieces of the flail, and take them to
the downstairs forge (along the north side of the map.) So the fact
that it exists, is not something that's a "spoiler" to you - you
should already know it.

You've now got the Fire head. The Cold head is near the forge, and the
Acid head is on the same *floor* as the fire head (but behind some
secret doors, the entrance to which can be found on the eastern side
of the map.) Once you have all three pieces, take them to the forge
and make another +3 weapon. You'll be pleased to know that you don't
have to kill any bosses to make it, in fact you can use it to *kill*
the final boss in the castle dungeons...

No. But then, there wasn't a time limit, other than from a
role-playing perspective, on the quest to investigate the De'Arnise
Keep, if you weren't taking Nalia with you (and then, the only time
limit was the fact that SHE leaves the party within a week.)
Otherwise, exactly the same events will happen whenever you arrive.

Hmm, I didn't even think of identifying the items yet. I was doing my
usual method of 'kill first and study the loot later.' Although I did
put together the flail, it still doesn't seem to be doing much damage. I
gave it to Minsc, but I'll try Anomen.

Even if he has no proficiency points in axes, its not a big
deal: the penalty for using a weapon without the required
proficiency is only 1 THAC0 for fighters (which includes
rangers), and maybe 1 damage (I have no docs at hand,
right now).

Both Minsc and Anomen don't yet have proficiency in flails, so they do
get to-hit and to-damage penalties with weapons they are not
proficient in, and I believe also a maximum of 1 attack per round.
Give Anomen a point in flail when he reaches level 12 and another when
he gets to 16... once he gets this he will be a real killer with it.
And then keep going if you want to.

But the Flail of Ages' main use is the extra 3 points of elemental
damage: it does +3 physical damage as a +3 weapon, and *also* adds an
extra 1 point in three different kinds of damage, fire, cold and acid.
This may not seem like much: but they can either (a) disrupt a
spellcaster's spellcasting even when he has cast Stoneskins (which
makes the player immune to direct physical damage for a few hits, but
elemental damage gets through, so he will take the 3 single points and
his spell will be disrupted), or (b) kill off a Troll once you've
knocked it down, without the need for using an arrow of fire or acid
or a spell of fire or acid - since it gives you fire and acid points
(both of which can kill trolls) as well as cold.

The axe you found in the golem chamber is also good in this regard, as
it gives an extra point each of cold and acid damage.

Hitting with the Flail can also slow enemies down, assuming you are
good with it.

And if you have the expansion set "Throne of Bhaal", there are two
more heads to the flail, adding poison and lightning damage, and when
you have added those as well it gives *2* points of each kind of
element instead of 1, and other nifty bonuses too. Of course both are
heavily guarded.

When fighting those golems, it's easier to fight them before grabbing the
items. Hit them before they turn red, then you can take them out one at a
time.
