Hello everyone a d thanks for stopping by to help me, im looking for a decent upgrade from the i5 2400 which ive had for a long time and i truly love but sadly its showing its age, i have a GTX 1060 and want to play Ark with decent framerates so yeah.. I was looking at the i5 8400 or i5 7400, are those a good bang for buck these days? Or is there something better? Is there any modern cpu with great Performance/price ratio i am missing? I would like to keep it possibly below $200, thanks again

Solution
Definitely the i5-8400, it has excellent performance per core which is good for gaming. Just remember that the 8400 does require a Z370 motherboard & DDR4 RAM.
Benchmarks I saw a while back it was about 10% behind last generation in single core performance, but that said, they are decent chips.

However, maybe wait a month or so. AMD is supposed to be bringing ryzen + out in April is what I'm hearing, which is a refresh of the current Ryzen series. Supposedly they are supposed to have a little higher clock speeds and maybe a little bump in single core performance. But if you have to have it now, to give you an idea, single core performance on current Ryzen CPUs is roughly equal to haswell. But multithreaded they have an advantage I think if you do a lot of stuff at once.

For strictly gaming the i5-8400 completely invalidates the entire Ryzen lineup. It's better than Ryzen 7 even and costs far less. The core performance is amazing. If you're doing streaming or heavy multitasking then Ryzen 7 would be a better choice though as it has tons of threads.

Comparing GHz and cores isn't helpful when comparing AMD CPUs to Intel CPUs.

Don't get a 7th gen Intel CPU, Z270 is an abandoned platform. Don't lock yourself into it.

I guess he can wait for Intel i5 8600 o Intel i5 8500 when they release the Budget Motherboards commie near..
