Hi everyone. I'm looking to upgrade my PC's CPU, motherboard, and case and monitor however don't know which components to get. My current specs are:
I3 6100 3.7GHz
GTX 1060 6GB
Gigabyte h110m-s2h
600w corsair psu
Some random gaming case
8GB 2333Hz GDDR4 ram
212 evo cpu cooler
Before I continue, my budget is £750, sorry if anyone is in the US, the prices are all different ofc.

The monitor I was looking at was:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B01LT04C30/ref=psdcmw_428652031_t1_B01LLGLG7W
1440P and 144hz are really what I'm looking for.

That and the CPU are my main priorities. I'm stuck now between an i5 7600k and an i7 7700k- for gaming only really that is.

I'm not really sure on the motherboard or case, however if I can't fit them into my budget it wouldn't be an issue really.

Thanks for the help everyone.

Actually you would be better of getting the i7 because more and more games are beginning to utilise more than four cores so this would probably be the better investment. Though I would buy the AMD Ryzen 1700 instead because it is cheaper and will give you very similar gaming performance and more cores too as well as still being overclockable. For the monitor you will probably need to upgrade your GPU too if you want to play at 1440p 144hz because it might be difficult for your 1060 to handle this. I would recommend the AOC - G2460PF 24.0" 1920x1080 144Hz Monitor. If you do go with the Ryzen 1700 I would go with the MSI - B350 TOMAHAWK ATX AM4 Motherboard as it is cheap and is very very well worth it. Finally for the case I highly...

For a gaming system, honestly the i5 will be good enough. Some of the recent issues to come to light with the Kaby Lake i7s is the hyperthreading, and since you don't really need more than 4 cores for gaming, you'll save power and heat by going with the i5. Just my 2 cents.

you dont need to change the mobo for a i7 7700(k), just make sure the bios is up to date before swapping it in

if you want a 1440p 144hz monitor you also need to get a gtx 1080 ti

Finally for the case I highly recommend the NZXT S340 Black/Red because it is an excellent case with tons of features in store and no doubt it looks beautiful. I went with the Black/Red edition because it goes well with the other parts I have selected for you. Here is the list of parts on PC Part Picker

If you are willing to spend some more money then the GTX 1080 is a decent way to go as it will last you and you can max out games on this monitor and allow you to upgrade monitor again down the line however it is not necessary.

Cheers man, great help. In your opinion, is 1440p worth it? I could sell my 1060, buy a 1070, i5 and 1440p 144hz monitor but that'd be the end of my budget all for the more pixels in the monitor. Do you recon it's worth it?

I don't think so because:
1. As I mentioned before it isn't sensible to buy an i5 at this point
2. Even a 1070 wont let you completely use your 1440p 144hz monitor to its fullest
3. It makes more sense to upgrade your monitor so drastically only if you upgrade your GPU to keep up with it so you are better off doing this further down the line
4. While 1440p is a great experience, 1080p is still a very good way to game and you wont be missing out much.
Rather than upgrading resolution now you could always bump it even higher later in the future (4K etc.)

Honestly, thanks for all your help. I recon I'll do what you recommended, however I recon I'll query between the 1700 and the 7700k. But again, thanks for being a huge help.

a ryzen build is inadequate for 144hz gaming

the intel i7 7700(k) is quite a bit superior for this specific task

1440p is superior to 1080p in every way
