decrease disk partition size

I have a single disk partitioned into a MBR then an extended partition in 3
logical disks. (hopefully that's the right terminology).

But myboot drive is running out of space.

How do I decrease one drive so that I can extend mz boot drive?

You didn't miss by that much with your terminology. What you have is one
hard disc that is divided into one primary partition (the one that contains
your operating system) and one extended partition containing three logical
drives.

The only way to change the size of a partition or logical drive without
losing data is with third party software. One such product often mentionned
is Partition Magic, by Symantec.

Can you move files from the boot drive to one of the other drives?

Moving your Outlook Express store, Temporary Internet files and My
Documents ( if used ) are all possibilities.

How large is the whole drive?

thanks Ted, you confirmed what I feared.

The partition is 10GB, but XP, Office & mydocuments has taken 8gb.
The disk itself is large, so the swapfile is already on another partition.
I can always save 'mydocuments' onto another disk.

Some other notes you may find useful.

Create a My Documents folder in another partition and copy ( not move )
the contents of My Documents to your new folder. Then delete the files
in your My Documents folder ( if you encounter problems deleting use
Shift + Delete to bypass the Recycle Bin ).

You will also need to change Default File locations in the Microsoft
Office programmes you
use. For Word go to Tools, Options, File Locations, highlight Documents,
click on Modify and change file path. For Excel go to Tools, Options,
General and change default file path.
