defender wont scan on new laptop.

I have just purchased a new dell inspirion 3585 laptop and in windows defender if I click quick , full or custom scan it wont scan.
Their is another option to do offline scan and if I click this the laptop says it will restart ( it did ) and the scan will take 15 minutes , at restart the screen flashed green and according to task manager defender was not running.

I am running windows 10 , is their a quick fix or should I just stop trying to use it , my main anti virus is Kaspersky paid for licence.
 
Hi , you ask if I put Kaspersky on my laptop which makes me think you are surprised that I have done this so let me give you a bit more information. The machine came with MacAfee 3 month trial but I don't trust MacAfee because it came pre-installed on another pc and Malwarebytes kept finding all sorts of things that MacAfee was missing. I checked my Kaspersky account and had 1 unused licence left.

I have worked out why the defender would not run ( it is now ) if it has never been run it wont work unless you check for updates from within the program itself , NOT via windows updates.

I don't run defender and Kaspersky at the same time because I know they would conflict , I use it on all my machines to scan for nasties once a week.

I have been a geek for about 17 years and I have found that various programs find things that others miss but the only program I have permanently running in the background is my main anti virus.
