Sys specs:
AMD 1600XP
NForce 420 mobo (lastest award bios)

My multipler is set to "Default" and I'm not too sure on what that is but I believe it to be 10.5 (reason 10.5x133=1400 or 1600XP). Anyway when I change the multiplier from "Default" to anything 5, 9, 10.5, 12 you name it, when the computer reboots during POST it resets my BIOS to factory defaults, argh ;\

Anyway, why is this happening?
Who is to blame/be killed?
And does this have to do with XP processors having this multiplier being locked and the only way to change it is through some soddering in which I will not only burn myself but destroy my processor and void the warrenty I don't have?

Argh %@#$ AMD and Intel!

Yes the multiplier is locked at 10.5 unless you unlock it by filling in the laser cuts
and connecting the L1 pins.

Clock the FSB if you want to overclock. You can never get the multiplier to change unless you get the engineering sample or you know to do some surgery to your CPU.

That works but not to much, I can get it to 1.44 or 1.48 (not quite stable enuff) (1.4 default btw) and the temp is around 50's C (I know that aint cool) but I think this thing can handle 10 more degrees w/o a problem. Oh well, guess I got what I paid for :)

Exactly which chip do you have (i.e. stepping)? If the chip won't OC very much using the FSB, then it probably won't do much more setting the multiplier higher once it's unlocked. In that case, it's not really worth the effort to unlock an XP (if that's what you have). Of course, something on the PCI / AGP bus or memory might be what's holding back your FSB OC, in which case your CPU might be capable of more.

When OCing the FSB the it doesn't seem to change the temp, nothing major anyway... But then again I can only get the FSB 7mhz or so higher than stock ;(

I think I would need a much nicer heatsink to really do some OCing. I'm happy where it's at for now.
