I have a win98SE machine that always runs defrag at startup. I've checked my
startup folder and "Windows Defragmentor" (for an option to run at startup),
but cannot find what is kicking it off. I've let it complete the scan
successfully several times, but it still want to run at startup. How do I
get it to stop? Thanks for any help!

Are you sure that's DEFRAG and not SCANDISK?

Start -> Run -> msconfig. Click the "Startup" tab, and check for any
reference to "defrag". If there is - uncheck it. That's what I'd do.

Go to the hard disk manufacturer's web site and download their diagnostic software
respective to your hard disk. After the test, you will know if the hard disk is bad or
not..

Besides the other helpful advice:

If it is scandisk, and not defrag, then you may have a ram problem.
Remove and reseat the ram sticks to ensure good connection.
If you have more than one stick of ram, try removing one at a time to see if you
have a faulty stick.
Download and install a ram testing program (free) such as memtest.
