hi people, i was wondering, after defraging my 160gb laptop with the vista OS, and using the windows defrag, my hard disk's available space became smaller by about 9-10gb, from 26 it became 27 or 26. any thoughts why this happened? or is this normal?

Most likely culprit using the space would be the system restore points. Each time the system is updated with a new patch or program instalation a new restore point is created, could be a new point was added after defrag.
You can delete the older restore points to make more space. You can also limit the amount of space it uses.
Normally about 15% on each drive is used.
Note that running System Restore requires administrative permissions.
