I worked at a big chain electronics store up until two days ago, and had to sign a nda about information that a microsoft rep came in and told the management team...

According to him, "windows 8" , isnt for desktops, its a watered down and gui optimized tablet operating system, which is supposed to be released q3/q4 of 2011. Its basically windows 7, with a lot of unnecessary services removed, and a kernal that is compatable with x86/x64 and RISC processors.

According to him, you CAN install it on a desktop, but it would be against the EULA and may not pass microsoft's yet to be released new authentication program.

The windows 8 that we think of as a desktop OS, according to him, may or may not be released with "windows 8" as the name, but it will not be the same as the tablet OS that will be released first, as windows 8.

Hope that makes sense.

Keep in mind, this is from a Microsoft rep, so any and all information that may have been said regardless of a NDA is hearsay and hypothetical...
