Dell dimension 1100 specs motherboard 2 memory slots not using more than 256 meg

Hello,
I have a dell dimension 1100. the computer has 2 memory slots. each slot had a 256m in it. bios said that it had 512m installed but windows(xp) states that only 256 meg installed.
