Question Dell E7440 8gb RAM but only 4gb is installed and the other slot is empty ?

Hello. Someone help me please.
I have dell e7440 with 8gb ram. I want to upgrade to 16 gb. My concern is this...

When i look at task manager, or system info, it says i have 8gb with 2 of 2 slots. So im thinking i have 2x4gb ram cards installed.

But when i open the back of the laptop, i see 1 slot has 4gb ram and the other slot is empty.

How is it possible? Task manager says i have 8gb with 2 of 2 slots, but i only have one 4gb ram installed and the other slot is empty.
And ultimately, how should i upgrade to 16gb?

Why do you think the ram stick in the machine is 4GB?
If you remove the stick what does the label show?
