Hello all, so I decided to look back into a dell EMC 2 fiber channel raid that I got along with the other random bits of server equipment, this thing supports 15 fiber channel drives, and mine comes with the caddies loaded up with 300gb ones! That means I have 4.5tb (well unformatted) sitting around going to waste. (and I have misplaced one drive somewhere)
I had contacted dell and heard from some people that I might need a special "head unit" that this attached to, or a special hard drive that handles something to do with it, I never got far with my research, and whatever I heard from dell discouraged me.
The thing is I've found cheap cards on ebay, such as this one (and I just noticed the shipping cost unfortunately lol)
http://www.ebay.com/itm/191494776095?_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT
Or this one http://www.ebay.com/itm/Qlogic-QLE2360-HBA-PCI-E-2GB-Single-Port-Fibre-Channel-Card-GK344-/252097229802?hash=item3ab22a73ea:g:AVAAAOSwWnFV~bf3
Which is way cheaper than the several hundred dollar cards I remember hearing about/seeing before, and the cables are cheaper than I recall too (found a couple for the $6-$15 range)
I would be so happy to get this thing working, and hook it up to my server for a massive increase in my nas capacity, and it would be great for finally being able to set up proper backups to protect my data from hard drive failures.
I need help figuring out if I can get this thing to work on it's own though, what sort of card and cable I would need, that sort of thing, and how they function when they are connected to a windows machine. I'm trying not to get my hopes up too much, but they are up there a bit.
Anyways, some various serial numbers I've gotten are below, and there is a video here going over all the labels in case there's something else that you might need. https://youtu.be/cI1OCcw9Tws
The unit itself has a part number of 005048498, revision A04
The fiber channel controllers have a part number of 005348489
I'm not sure if I would need a card with multiple ports, if the two controllers allow you to connect to two machines, so you would need one card with two ports, and thus two cables to connect one machine up, I'd never even heard of fiber channel till I heard of this thing, let alone had a chance to see it working, so it's all new to me, I figure this is a good place to find people who have worked with this in proper server environments.
The server that it will be connecting to is an HP Proliant DL380 G4, so I'm not sure if it would be best to find an hp branded card, or maybe dell since it's a dell unit.
edit: just found a dell controller card, though the cables look to be the wrong type, unless they use different ends on some http://www.ebay.com/itm/Dell-ND407-Emulex-LPE1150-E-4Gb-Fibre-Channel-PCI-E-PCIe-x4-FC-Network-Card-HBA-/191475066081?hash=item2c94cda4e1:g:vFQAAOSw8d9UraPn
